"Do you have a sunset shot with an orange sun that fills the screen?" "How about kids doing tricks on their bicycles?" "What about a red Porsche driving fast down a curvy street?" These are some of the stock footage requests that New & Unique Videos fields every day from some of the nation's largest television, movie and advertising producers.

New & Unique Videos provides images that can't be found anywhere else, and in most cases with a one-day turnaround. Research is free, and a time-coded window dub of selected shots goes for $35/ editing hour. If they don't have the shot, their affiliate company, Crystal Pyramid Productions, will shoot custom footage according to the client's specifications. Says president, Mark Schulze, "Our sunny southern California location provides ample opportunity for new and unique shots to resolve many production needs. We can go out tomorrow morning and shoot signage, coastline, mountains, deserts, whatever a client wants -- and then in most cases get it out the door for next-day delivery. Our clients find this a plus when they need to air a production right away."

The New & Unique Videos vaults contain over 10,000 images of contemporary, off-beat, comic and historical video material gathered from around the world. The company also represents the footage of other producers. "The collaboration is 50/50," says Schulze. "I tell producers, if you have some good footage on Betacam SP or digital format and want me to help you sell it, get me a time-coded window dub of your material and log your footage. I find that most shooters are not attracted to that kind of paperwork, but if they listed their footage, they could create a whole new source of revenue."

"Stock footage sales are growing," says Patty Mooney, Schulze's partner. "There is now more of a demand for moving images for the web, CD-ROMs, corporate videos, TV spots and television shows. With New & Unique Videos, we make a lot of window dubs, but what we are really aiming for is to sell that $25 to $35/second, 10-second minimum clip. We want to provide the image that the producer can't live without."

Some recent clients include Real TV airing clips of a Tasmanian devil attacking a camera shot in Australia, and a man going down the face of a cliff on his mountain bike. "Virtual Obsession," a Movie-of-the-Week starting Peter Gallagher and Mimi Rogers, features New & Unique images of the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. A clip known as "Headless Driver" apears on "The World's Worst Drivers II" and "When Cars Attack."

Current library acquisitions include Caribbean underwater shots, Tibetan monks in Nepal, extreme sports (for which we get the most requests), African animals, an albino kangaroo, dental and manufacturing shots, demolition derbies, car racing, black & white and color archive films from the 1930's to 1969 and shots of the Yucatan, Machu Picchu, Peru, Chicago, Las Vegas and Reno.

New & Unique Videos can be reached at (619) 644-3000 or visitors can check out their website which lists much of their stock footage at: www.newuniquevideos.com.
